What is the Open Water Diver?

The Open Water Diver is the first international recreational scuba diving certification. It allows you to dive independently to 18 metres depth at any dive site in the world, for life.

It is the entry-level diving certification. The one that opens the door to everything else: advanced courses, specialities, guided dives at any dive centre in the world.

At Pro Dive we run it under the SSI programme, one of the most internationally recognised training systems. The certification you receive has permanent validity and is accepted worldwide.

What's included

How the course works

The Open Water combines three phases worked progressively. No skipping ahead — each stage prepares the next.

Online theory training

Before entering the water you access the SSI study materials in digital format. Complete it at your own pace, from your phone or computer, in English.

You will learn the fundamentals of scuba diving: underwater physics, physiology, dive planning and safety procedures. Nothing to memorise without context — everything has a direct application in the water.

Confined water practice

With the theory covered, we move to the pool or a shallow protected area. Here you practise the core skills: buoyancy control, equipment handling, underwater communication and safety procedures.

The controlled environment allows you to correct, repeat and consolidate each technique before diving in open water. With groups of maximum 4 people, the instructor has real time to focus on you, not the group.

Open water dives

The open water dives are the heart of the course. You will complete a minimum of 4 dives on the seabed of Lanzarote, guided by an SSI instructor with experience in these waters.

From Costa Teguise we have direct access to dive sites suited to training: volcanic rocky reefs, good visibility and marine life characteristic of the Canary Islands. You are not diving just anywhere — you are diving in one of the best learning environments there is.
